School of Grammar ~ Elementary Art ~ K-3rd Grade
Art CreationThe first few years in art are structured with a project based curriculum. Students are exposed to all mediums; 2 dimensional supplies encompassing; pencil, markers, color pencil, chalk, oil pastel, painting, watercolor, and printmaking and 3 dimensional materials including clay, sculpting with various items, and collage. They learn the proper name and accurate use of each tool for the best end result in their project. Even though we are focusing on the fundamentals in art during these early years, students are still given many opportunities at explore their creativity and individuality.

Art DiscussionAt Eagle Ridge Academy we utilize Core Knowledge curriculum where its foundation sees the arts as an essential part of the knowledge all children should learn. During the course of the year art terminology is introduced as students observe, compare and contrast, and analyze many great works of art. Yes, even in the Kindergarten and 1st grade classes. Students learn these terms as I model them in our large group discussion. Allowing students to look deeper and process the art work through their interpretations and imagination is just as important as finding clues the artist purposely places in the piece to tell us about the work of art.

Art ApplicationThrough attaining a basic knowledge of the arts, children are not only better prepared to understand and appreciate works of art, but also to communicate their ideas, feelings, and judgments to others. A good understanding of the arts grows out of at least three modes of knowledge: creative (i.e., directly making artworks), historical, and analytical. Early study of the arts should embrace all three modes with special emphasis on creativity and active participation.

Art is knowing which ones to keep.” Scott Adams
